Horse Racing:

This is the worst day for betting at Cheltenham in my eyes and being very cautious is advised with tomorrow looking like a big opportunity for winners. But I’ll try and walk through angles to aim at for the card today.

1:30 – This is a seriously wide open race. I like Asterion Forlonge a lot but jumping right is a bit of a concern. It looks the right favourite though. Abacadabras should be able to tank into this one and looks a good shout to place at a minimum. Shishkin might be found out here. Chantry House has the potential to go close here though I think it has a better chance at Aintree than here. Fiddlerontheroof could be anything here and Captain Guiness looks a serious E/W player, it was keen throughout its last start and has loads of potential still. If I was betting on it this would be the value pick.

2:10 – No strong opinions on this one. I’d probably be looking to take on the market principals though, any E/W gamble on a horse like Al Dancer or Esprit Du Large would be interesting.

2:50 – Hardest race of the day right here. The Conditional was the eye catcher for me of the shorter priced horses. Vintage Clouds is a standing dish in this race that gives its running, Nicky Henderson also likes this race so his horses are E/W players and Elwood is one of interest for Gordon Elliott. It could either win or be absolute trash but is maybe worth a poke at 22/1.

3:30 – Epatante is my strongest fancy of the day and is a 2pt play for me. It should have too much speed for these and I don’t buy into the angle that it struggled at Cheltenham last time. It was only its third ever hurdles start and it is 10x the horse now. Darver Star is a serious E/W player here.

4:10 – Benie Des Dieux should win if it stands up but is too short in the betting. Roksana will be an E/W player here.

4:50 – This is seriously wide open, I think there’s better races to play this week and I have no real opinions on this one.

5:30 – This is a serious slog and a straightforward horse is a requirement. Lord Du Mesnil looks to fit that bill and looks value against Carefully Selected who could outclass these if staying the trip. Newtide and The Hollow Ginge are also interesting.

Review of Saturday:

Saturday was pretty poor on my part. The German women shot really poorly in the biathlon and got turned over by Norway due to it, at least I redeemed it with winning selections on Sunday but can’t count them in this column.

The horses were both major letdowns, Saint De Vassy went into 1/2 then ran a shocker, Whoshotthesheriff looked like it would win by 20l turning for home then ran out of petrol

Peterborough won at least. But Carlisle were a disaster and Norwich were a shade unlucky but missed good chances as relegation sides can tend to do.

To cap it off the England handicap bet lost. This was seriously unlucky, a red card and just some silly defensive lapses letting us down. I do feel though England are comfortably better than Wales and this game was just a case of bad luck.
