This is the final gameweek of the Premier League what if series. The main focus will be the top 4 scrap between Chelsea and Man United and also who will be the final team relegated between Bournemouth and Watford. Scroll down to see the final week predictions and where everyone would’ve finished the season.
n.b. There was a mistake in the table last week, I accidentally put the Palace vs Wolves game as a draw last week instead of a Palace win so Palace are 11th and Burnley 12th after this update.
Arsenal vs Watford
What would have happened:
The last game between these sides was a 2-2 draw where Arsenal had a 2-0 lead but imploded and were very lucky not to lose that game. But Watford are a far better team at home than away and the same can be said of Arsenal so I’d fancy them to turn the tables here. But Watford do have the incentive of needing a win to stay up. But I can’t see them doing it here, Arsenal to win a close game.
Arsenal 2-1 Watford
Burnley vs Brighton and Hove Albion
What would have happened:
Burnley come into this sliding in form while Brighton have just picked up the result they need to stay up. But I can see this being a direct repeat of the result earlier in the season when these teams faced off and Burnley picked up a late equaliser. They will create more chances this time but I can see Brighton still being solid at the back and keeping them to 1 goal.
Burnley 1-1 Brighton
Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers
What would have happened:
I’d have fancied Chelsea to win here. They took Wolves apart earlier in the year and with Wolves having nothing to play for at the end of the season and Chelsea having a lot to play for here they should have the motivation and fitness edge needed to win this one. Look for Abraham to have had another good day here.
Chelsea 2-0 Wolves
Crystal Palace vs Tottenham Hotspur
What would have happened:
Spurs have an extremely good record in the league at Selhurst Park and I expect them to continue that good work here. They would be back to near full strength at this point and with Palace being disappointing as of late, I believe Spurs will win this one comfortably.
Crystal Palace 0-2 Spurs
Everton vs AFC Bournemouth
What would have happened:
Bournemouth have to win in order to stay up but Everton have been playing well at home as of late and will be no pushover. Bournemouth have also lost every time they’ve gone to Goodison Park which further pushes the odds against them. They can take some comfort though in winning 3-1 earlier in the season against Everton. I can see their motivation edge getting them some goals, but I don’t trust them to stay firm at the back against an Everton side that are pretty good going forward.
Everton 2-2 Bournemouth
Leicester City vs Manchester United
What would have happened:
Leicester have historically struggled a lot against United but I fancy them to get a result here. United have struggled all year away from home while Leicester are one of the strongest teams in the league at home. The game at Old Trafford was even enough despite Leicester losing in the end so I believe they can turn the tables and win this time even though United have the incentive of a top 4 finish if they won.
Leicester 2-1 Man United
Manchester City vs Norwich City
What would have happened:
Both teams have little to play for and Man City are a far stronger side than Norwich so I expect a very comfortable home win to end the season for them and Norwich will be finished in the Premier League.
Man City 3-0 Norwich
Newcastle United vs Liverpool
What would have happened:
Liverpool have historically struggled at St James’ Park and I could see them dropping points here now they’ve reached 100 points for the season, have nothing to play for and will be starting the party having won the title. Newcastle tend to step up at home to the big teams and the atmosphere will still be intense given it would’ve been their final home game of the season.
Newcastle 1-1 Liverpool
Southampton vs Sheffield United
What would have happened:
Southampton managed to upset Sheffield United earlier in the season and I can see them causing Sheffield United problems again here. They do have the worst home form in the league still though and that would probably put me off saying they’d win this outright.
Southampton 1-1 Sheffield United
West Ham United vs Aston Villa
What would have happened:
The previous matchup between these sides was a 0-0 but with both defences in really poor form this season, I can’t see the same happening here. Villa will want to go out swinging and I can see them pulling out a performance that gets them a draw here with Grealish showing off why he’ll sign for a top 6 club next season.
West Ham 2-2 Aston Villa
