Football League Gameweek 3 Previews and Predictions

Hey everyone. After an extremely successful set of predictions last time with a 12/1 accumulator winner. I’m back again to preview the midweek games for the football league. If you enjoy my posts, feel free to donate here to the blog to help with its upkeep.

Barnsley vs Luton Town

Odds: Barnsley – 11/10  Draw – 12/5  Luton – 12/5

What I think will happen:

The prices feel wrong in this one for me, Barnsley were extremely fortunate to win at the weekend against Coventry and could easily have lost 2-0 on another day. Luton probably just ran into a good team with West Brom though the set piece defending has to be a concern. I think these teams are level with maybe even Luton currently being a better side but with Barnsley being at home, I’ll pick a draw here in a close matchup.

Barnsley 1-1 Luton

Blackpool vs Coventry City

Odds: Blackpool – 7/4  Draw – 11/5  Coventry – 13/8

What I think will happen:

I’m taking Coventry to win here, they played well at the weekend and could easily have won with better finishing and look to have taken more naturally to this league than Blackpool. I’m not sure I would bet this game since Blackpool do have some resilience about them based on their week 1 draw but Coventry are definitely better at the moment and can score a couple of goals here.

Blackpool 0-2 Coventry

Huddersfield Town vs Preston North End

Odds: Huddersfield – 8/5  Draw – 21/10  Preston – 15/8

What I think will happen:

I have both teams as nearer the bottom than the top in the long run and both defences have been shambolic so far this season. Huddersfield did at least look good in week 1 going forward against Derby who are probably near the standard Preston are playing at the moment so with home advantage I’m going to take them to edge a win against a really poor Preston side.

Huddersfield 2-1 Preston

Millwall vs Fulham

Odds: Millwall – 12/5  Draw – 11/5  Fulham – 5/4

What I think will happen:

I feel Fulham are a bit too short of a price here. Millwall are a bit unlucky to be sitting on 2 draws so far this season and look like they should be a top half team at the end of the season. With no Wilson for Fulham and a couple of their goals last week coming through defensive mistakes, I can see them finding it much harder to score here and Millwall should be able to score here so I’m taking a 1-1 draw.

Millwall 1-1 Fulham

Peterborough United vs Cardiff City

Odds: Peterborough – 12/5  Draw – 9/4  Cardiff – 6/5

What I think will happen:

I’ve been really impressed by Cardiff so far this season, they were deserving of the win last week and the playoffs is a very realistic possibility if they can hold their form. Peterborough meanwhile haven’t looked amazing in either game and you feel Derby threw away a result last week after taking the lead. I’m going to take Cardiff to continue their hot streak and nick a win here with another professional performance.

Peterborough 0-1 Cardiff

Swansea City vs Stoke City

Odds: Swansea – 13/8  Draw – 11/5  Stoke – 7/4

What I think will happen:

Both teams drew 0-0 last weekend and it wouldn’t remotely surprise me if the same happened again. They look extremely well matched and with the lack of quality chances created from both teams last weekend, I can see this being a really low scoring affair. I would say Stoke are the more likely winners though with the Swansea defence seeming slightly more suspect than theirs but I’m going with a 0-0 here.

Swansea 0-0 Stoke

Reading vs Bristol City

Odds: Reading – 11/10  Draw – 12/5  Bristol City – 5/2

What I think will happen:

I’ve not been particularly impressed by either of these sides so far and this feels like a lower mid table clash already. My theory for these games was always to back the underdog since the home team would be a short price just because they’re at home even though the teams are evenly matched and I can definitely see Bristol City scoring here. I just don’t trust them to hold a lead so I can see this one being a draw.

Reading 1-1 Bristol City

Birmingham City vs Bournemouth

Odds: Birmingham – 21/10  Draw – 23/10  Bournemouth – 11/8

What I think will happen:

I was more impressed with Bournemouth last week than in their first game as they showed more resilience than before but this is another tough away trip. Birmingham should’ve beaten Stoke last weekend and are playing really well at the moment, I just worry that they may not be able to stop Bournemouth from scoring since Bournemouth are a slick side going forward and that another draw beckons here for them.

Birmingham 1-1 Bournemouth

Hull City vs Derby County

Odds: Hull – 10/11  Draw – 13/5  Derby – 11/4

What I think will happen:

I’m not too surprised that Hull blew up last week considering their week 1 win was made more emphatic by Preston’s back up keeper but even so, I’m finding it hard not to pick them to win here. Derby are just terrible, it feels like they’ll do very well not to finish bottom and won’t really improve until Christmas at the earliest so I can’t really pick them to get a result until they start showing better form. That being said, this Hull team isn’t a side I’d want to be backing at odds on too often.

Hull 2-0 Derby

Middlesbrough vs Queens Park Rangers

Odds: Middlesbrough – 11/8  Draw – 23/10  QPR – 2/1

What I think will happen:

Both teams for me are in the same category again of decent but maybe not consistent enough to make a playoff push and looking more towards the 9th-12th zone in this league. They also are playing at a similar standard which makes this one a complete coinflip for me. It could well be a draw but I’m leaning towards QPR just because they have a bit more about them going forward and Middlesbrough have been prone to defensive lapses so I’ll cautiously take them to nick a win.

Middlesbrough 1-2 QPR

Nottingham Forest vs Blackburn Rovers

Odds: Notts Forest – 6/4  Draw – 23/10  Blackburn – 15/8

What I think will happen:

Forest for me seem to have a resiliency issue that’s more mental than based on talent as they feel like they should be good enough to make a playoff push but have bottled it in back to back weeks now. They created very little against 10 man Bournemouth and I can see them blowing another lead here. For Blackburn this could be the same sort of game as last weekend, be on the back foot, concede but nick an equaliser and hold on for a draw.

Forest 1-1 Blackburn

West Bromwich Albion vs Sheffield United

Odds: West Brom – 11/10  Draw – 12/5  Sheff United – 13/5

What I think will happen:

I like West Brom a lot here. Them and Fulham when fully fit are clearly the best 2 sides in this league and Sheffield United have been probably the most disappointing of the fancied teams to go up so far. They could easily have lost again last week and haven’t shown anything to say they have a lot of goals in them. They also struggled against crosses in week 1 and West Brom like to cross the ball a lot so I can see them having a lot of joy and winning fairly easily.

West Brom 2-0 Sheffield United

League One

AFC Wimbledon vs Gillingham

Odds: Wimbledon – 11/10  Draw – 9/4  Gillingham  – 13/5

What I think will happen:

I was slightly disappointed that Wimbledon weren’t able to win last weekend but I do have to give them credit for being able to fight back from a 3-1 deficit and Bolton are a better attacking side than Gillingham so I’ll pick Wimbledon to win again here. Gillingham really disappointed me last weekend with how they were outplayed in a game I’d have expected to be even and fully deserved to lose. I can see them scoring here but still losing.

Wimbledon 2-1 Gillingham

Accrington Stanley vs Doncaster Rovers

Odds: Accrington – 11/10  Draw – 5/2  Doncaster – 12/5

What I think will happen:

Accrington did enough to win last week but didn’t look like world beaters in getting there though they also didn’t have too much to worry about defensively. They’ve gotten lucky again here with drawing a home matchup against a team that are playing poorly at the moment, though I could see them having a tough game here. Doncaster played well until they went behind last week and could easily have scored early on another day and then who knows what would have happened. I fancy them to score here and maybe get a result this time though they still do look like a poor team.

Accrington 1-1 Doncaster

Burton Albion vs Sunderland

Odds: Burton – 23/10  Draw – 9/4  Sunderland – 5/4

What I think will happen:

Burton have made a really good start to the season though did look vulnerable at times last week and I feel Sunderland will be able to punish them this time unlike Ipswich. Sunderland feel like they could finally get themselves promoted this season with the way they’re playing and can grind out a 1-0 win here against a dogged Burton side.

Burton 0-1 Sunderland

Cheltenham Town vs Ipswich Town

Odds: Cheltenham – 11/5  Draw – 21/10  Ipswich – 6/4

What I think will happen:

I don’t particularly trust either side at the moment. Cheltenham looked good against Crewe but were put in their place at the weekend by Wycombe and the defence may be a bit of a concern against better sides. Ipswich meanwhile are just a mess at the back and possibly poorly managed so I can see both teams maybe focusing more on defence here and playing out a 0-0 in a tight matchup.

Cheltenham 0-0 Ipswich

Lincoln City vs Bolton Wanderers

Odds: Lincoln – 13/10  Draw – 12/5  Bolton – 21/10

What I think will happen:

I thought Lincoln would struggle last week and they did in the first half but they impressed me a lot with their second half performance and deserved the win in the end. They come up against a good attacking side in Bolton here and I fancy there to be goals in this game, I can see Lincoln edging it though just because they’re the better team with a slightly better defence.

Lincoln 3-2 Bolton

Milton Keynes Dons vs Charlton Athletic

Odds: MK Dons – 29/20  Draw – 5/2  Charlton – 9/5

What I think will happen:

Both of these teams are similar to me. They’re solid enough teams who should be in the top half but don’t currently feel like playoff sides. It feels like the winner will be the team who makes the least mistakes and I’m going to give the nod to Charlton since they at least have a clean sheet on the board this season though any result wouldn’t remotely surprise me at all here.

MK Dons 1-2 Charlton

Morecambe vs Rotherham United

Odds: Morecambe – 3/1  Draw – 5/2  Rotherham – 19/20

What I think will happen:

Rotherham were a shade disappointing against Wigan considering they were so well backed but they should be able to make amends. Morecambe will likely be comfortably in the bottom half this season and I don’t trust their defence even though they’ve had good results so far. It feels like a trap game for Rotherham but I’d hope they’ll be good enough to overcome it and get the win here.

Morecambe 0-2 Rotherham

Oxford United vs Crewe Alexandra

Odds: Oxford – 5/6  Draw – 5/2  Crewe – 7/2

What I think will happen:

Crewe have looked seriously poor so far this season and offered nothing last weekend against Portsmouth. With Oxford able to put in a really solid performance at the weekend, I can see them riding the momentum to what should be a comfortable enough win in this one and I like them to make a playoff push this season.

Oxford 3-0 Crewe

Plymouth Argyle vs Cambridge United

Odds: Plymouth – 19/20  Draw – 11/4 Cambridge – 13/5

What I think will happen:

Plymouth deserved to win by more than what the scoreline suggested last weekend and coming off the back of that performance, they have another good chance to get a win here against a Cambridge side who are still offering little going forward in my eyes. The only reason they scored last weekend was a goalkeeping howler and with Plymouth carrying the momentum into this one, it should be a win for them.

Plymouth 2-0 Cambridge

Portsmouth vs Shrewsbury Town

Odds: Portsmouth – 7/10  Draw – 3/1  Shrewsbury – 15/4

What I think will happen:

I thought Portsmouth would be a shorter price for this. Shrewsbury were dreadful again at the weekend and it feels like this should be the midweek banker. Portsmouth have been solid at the back and offered a threat going forward and should be bang up towards the top this season. Shrewsbury meanwhile have started like a relegation side and should lose comfortably again here.

Portsmouth 2-0 Shrewsbury

Sheffield Wednesday vs Fleetwood Town

Odds: Sheff Wed – 10/11  Draw – 5/2  Fleetwood – 16/5

What I think will happen:

I’m going to take the plunge with Fleetwood getting a result again. Sheffield Wednesday were still not great last week until they went 1 ahead against one of the weaker sides in the league and while Fleetwood do struggle to finish chances, they’ve shown a lot going forward this season and are unlucky to be sat on 0 points. That changes tonight for me and I’m tempted to take the full upset here.

Sheff Wed 1-2 Fleetwood

Wigan Athletic vs Wycombe Wanderers

Odds: Wigan – 7/5  Draw – 12/5  Wycombe – 2/1

What I think will happen:

Both sides have made really promising starts to the season though Wigan have faced the stronger sides in that time. I feel this is another coinflip game and I’m finding it hard to land on a side with both of these teams being solid so I’m going to just take a draw in a game that also feels like a lottery.

Wigan 1-1 Wycombe

League Two

Barrow vs Exeter City

Odds: Barrow – 8/5  Draw – 9/4  Exeter – 17/10

What I think will happen:

I’m still not sold on Barrow though they did well to win at the weekend and they may have a chance to win again here. Exeter were extremely disappointing at the weekend and played like a team that were a bit lost towards the end. If Exeter were playing well they would be a good shout to win here but with neither side in any form I might take Barrow just because they have positive momentum about them.

Barrow 2-1 Exeter

Bradford City vs Stevenage

Odds: Bradford – 19/20  Draw – 23/10  Stevenage – 16/5

What I think will happen:

Stevenage have looked really polished under the radar so far this season and with Bradford struggling to finish chances last weekend, I fancy them to get a draw here and wouldn’t be surprised if they won. Bradford are probably the better team in the longer run but they need to iron out a couple of things to push for the title and I can see them dropping points in this one.

Bradford 2-2 Stevenage

Bristol Rovers vs Oldham Athletic

Odds: Bristol Rovers – 19/20  Draw – 13/5  Oldham – 14/5

What I think will happen:

I wouldn’t currently trust either of these teams with my money and I’m leaning towards a draw here. Bristol Rovers haven’t played well in either of their games and really need to get things together if they don’t want this to be a lost season. Oldham meanwhile nearly got a point that would’ve been a proper smash and grab job before giving away a foolish penalty with the last kick of the game. I’d also be worried about the keeper if I was an Oldham fan as both goals last weekend could definitely have been saved. With 2 fairly out of form teams playing, the safest pick feels like a draw.

Bristol Rovers 1-1 Oldham

Colchester United vs Mansfield Town

Odds: Colchester – 19/10  Draw – 23/10  Mansfield – 6/4

What I think will happen:

I’m a little surprised Mansfield aren’t a shorter price here, they’re ok at the back and can restrict chances and with Colchester really struggling to finish off chances at the moment, I can see them getting a 1-0 win here with a set piece goal after 2 wins against teams expected to be up towards the top. Colchester will improve in the long run and once they find their shooting boots, they will be a solid enough team.

Colchester 0-1 Mansfield

Crawley Town vs Salford City

Odds: Crawley – 23/10  Draw – 11/5  Salford – 13/10

What I think will happen:

I don’t rate either team here. Salford probably should’ve lost at the weekend and the lack of attacking so far is a real concern for me. But they have drawn a lifeline in getting to play a Crawley team who were dismal against Hartlepool in week 1 and if they are going to get their season rolling, they have to win here. I can see Salford grinding out a 1-0 to get things going.

Crawley 0-1 Salford

Port Vale vs Carlisle United

Odds: Port Vale – 6/4  Draw – 23/10  Carlisle – 19/10

What I think will happen:

I’m surprised Port Vale are favourites here, they played ok at the weekend but Carlisle look like being a solid team this season and I would say that with their more clinical nature, they can get the win here if Port Vale miss chances again.

Port Vale 0-1 Carlisle

Rochdale vs Forest Green Rovers

Odds: Rochdale – 15/8  Draw – 23/10  Forest Green – 6/4

What I think will happen:

Forest Green thrive on playing away to out of sorts teams and they get that exact scenario here. Rochdale have really disappointed so far this season and don’t look great at the back. There could be some turmoil there and Forest Green should be able to take full advantage and nick a win here coming off a very strong weekend performance.

Rochdale 1-2 Forest Green

Swindon Town vs Tranmere Rovers

Odds: Swindon – 17/10  Draw – 12/5  Tranmere – 8/5

What I think will happen:

This is an evenly matched game for me. Tranmere created next to nothing at Port Vale at the weekend but Swindon aren’t great at the back so they should be able to score. It does feel like a 1-1 game though with Swindon offering enough attacking threat to get through a solid Tranmere defence as well.

Swindon 1-1 Tranmere

Walsall vs Scunthorpe United

Odds: Walsall  – 5/6  Draw – 13/5  Scunthorpe – 10/3

What I think will happen:

I’m surprised to see Walsall at odds on here. Scunthorpe are a likely relegation side but Walsall have been dismal in their first 2 games. Scunthorpe will likely park the bus here and try and do their winning at home and I can see them succeeding and getting a 0-0 from this one.

Walsall 0-0 Scunthorpe

Suggested Accumulator:

West Brom

Plymouth pays at 12/1
